New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art transformed into a dazzling celebration of Black heritage, artistry, and style on Monday evening as the Met Gala 2025 unfolded under cloudy skies and a splash of elegance.
Despite a bit of rain, spirits ran high as fashion’s biggest night made a bold statement—this year’s event was more than just glamour; it was a tribute.
The famed steps of the Met were covered in blue for the occasion, setting the scene for a night that honored tradition while embracing bold reinvention. Designers, stylists, celebrities, and cultural icons came together to celebrate this year’s theme: “Tailored for You.”
A Theme Rooted in Black Style and History
Every year, the Met Gala revolves around a specific dress code linked to the museum's Costume Institute exhibit. In 2024, that exhibition is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” a deep dive into the rich history of Black fashion, particularly the cultural and political power of dandyism.
This year's theme challenged guests to creatively interpret classic tailoring through the lens of Black identity and innovation. The inspiration? Zoot suits, Harlem Renaissance flair, and modern reimaginings of classic menswear.
Fashion legend Dapper Dan, speaking with CNN before the event, emphasized that true dandyism originated with zoot suits and jazz culture. “It’s when Black artists and creatives began to dress the way they felt,” he explained. And Monday night, that spirit was alive and well.
Tailoring for All: A Focus on Menswear, Reimagined
For the first time in Met Gala history, the dress code spotlighted menswear—a twist that pushed designers to reinterpret traditional tailoring in creative, gender-fluid, and avant-garde ways. This was far from a typical black-tie affair. Think oversized lapels, architectural shoulders, and suits with stories to tell.
Doja Cat set the tone in a sharp, structured Marc Jacobs look that echoed 1980s power suits. Her exaggerated shoulder pads and bold silhouette made a strong case for tailoring as high art. Tessa Thompson and Doechii followed suit (literally), embracing wide-lapeled blazers with a fresh and fearless attitude.
One of the night’s most talked-about ensembles came from Janelle Monáe, who delivered a visual performance with her “suit-within-a-suit” look. She arrived in an overcoat printed with a graphic blazer and tie—only to remove it and reveal an actual tailored suit underneath. The ensemble was topped off with a bowler hat and a whimsical monocle with rotating clock hands, making her outfit both literal and surreal.
Standout Looks: Classic Tailoring Meets Personal Expression
From Zendaya’s three-piece Louis Vuitton suit to Lupita Nyong’o’s aquamarine Chanel outfit complete with a chiffon cape and matching hat, the red carpet was packed with bold, beautiful tributes to tailoring’s history and its limitless future.
The men, too, brought creativity and color. Regé-Jean Page, known for his breakout role in Bridgerton, stunned in head-to-toe red. Henry Golding opted for gold (naturally), while Bad Bunny wore a relaxed brown two-piece paired with a traditional Puerto Rican pava hat—a subtle nod to heritage.
Honoring Black Icons and Personal Histories
Many attendees used the theme to pay tribute to influential Black figures in fashion and culture.
Actor Colman Domingo, one of this year’s Met Gala co-chairs, wore a majestic blue cape from Valentino—designed in homage to the late André Leon Talley, the legendary Vogue editor-at-large. Lewis Hamilton, another co-chair and Formula 1 champion, nodded to Talley too, wearing glossy patent leather shoes inspired by his style.
Actress Anne Hathaway honored the editor in her own way, donning a white button-down shirt paired with a striking Carolina Herrera column dress—sophisticated and symbolic.
Some attendees looked inward for inspiration. Ayo Edebiri, star of The Bear, told Vogue that her Ferragamo look reflected the elegant, dandy-like men in her own family—especially her father.
Others channeled fashion pioneers. Gigi Hadid's shimmering Miu Miu look was inspired by Zelda Wynn Valdes, a trailblazing Black fashion designer who dressed stars like Ella Fitzgerald and Josephine Baker. Jodie Turner-Smith gave a graceful nod to equestrian icon Selina Lazevski.
And finally, the living icons themselves graced the carpet. The legendary Diana Ross made a show-stopping return to the Met for the first time since 2003. Her gown? A stunning, 60-pound masterpiece with an 18-foot train embroidered with the names of her children and grandchildren—a regal tribute to family and legacy.
More Than Just Fashion
This year’s Met Gala reminded us that fashion is about more than fabric—it’s about identity, resistance, history, and pride. From sharp suits to personal tributes, every look on the carpet told a story. And while the tailoring theme may have focused on menswear, it ultimately challenged all attendees to reflect on the deeper meanings behind their style choices.
Whether inspired by jazz-era zoot suits or modern Black innovators, the 2024 Met Gala was a vibrant, unforgettable celebration of Black creativity and influence in fashion—and a powerful reminder that style can be both personal and political.
