The long-awaited trailer has finally arrived! On Wednesday, Netflix dropped a thrilling new trailer for Season 2 of the global sensation Squid Game.
While the trailer doesn’t reveal much about the deadly games themselves, it puts Lee Jung-Jae’s character, Player 456, at the forefront, showing his reasons for returning to the game for a second round.
In this new season, Player 456, the only survivor of the first competition, re-enters the deadly arena with a mission to take down the sinister game and save lives. The trailer depicts his attempts to guide the other 455 contestants through the games, while some are solely focused on winning the prize, no matter the cost. The trailer also hints at intense clashes between the players and guards, along with new, life-threatening challenges designed to push everyone to their breaking point.
Joining Lee Jung-Jae in the second season are Wi Ha-jun, reprising his role as the determined detective Hwang Jun-ho, and Lee Byung-hun as the mysterious Front Man. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk returns as both director and executive producer, with Kim Ji-yeon also serving as an executive producer.
The official synopsis reads: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 declines an opportunity to move to the United States and returns with a new resolve. Gi-hun once again enters the mysterious survival game, where he faces a life-or-death struggle alongside new contestants, all vying for the grand prize of 45.6 billion won.”
In addition to Lee Jung-jae, familiar faces returning to the cast include Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo. New additions to the cast include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Lee Jin-uk, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, Jo Yu-ri, and Won Ji-an.
Squid Game, which premiered in 2021, quickly became a cultural phenomenon, becoming Netflix’s most-watched show with over 2.2 billion hours viewed, equivalent to roughly 265 million views. The first season received widespread critical acclaim, earning 17 Emmy nominations and winning six awards, including Best Actor in a Drama for Lee Jung-jae and Best Guest Actress in a Drama for Lee You-mi.
The highly anticipated second season is set to premiere on December 26.
