Superstar Rajinikanth and director Mani Ratnam’s iconic 1991 gangster drama Thalapathi is set to return to theaters on December 12, 2024, in celebration of Rajinikanth’s 74th birthday.
The film, inspired by the Hindu epic Mahabharata, follows Surya, an orphan raised in the slums with a kind heart. After a run-in with a thug, Surya attracts the attention of the powerful gangster Deva, and the two form a deep friendship. However, their bond is tested when a respected district collector, who turns out to be Surya’s relative, complicates their plans. The film explores Surya’s search for his true origins and the evolution of his relationship with Deva.
Alongside Rajinikanth, Thalapathi features Mammootty and Arvind Swamy, the latter making his debut. The ensemble cast includes Jaishankar, Amrish Puri, Srividya, Bhanupriya, and others. Notably, the film marks the final collaboration between Mani Ratnam and composer Ilaiyaraaja.
