Kino Lorber released the first trailer for Oh, Canada, a new drama from director Paul Schrader,
starring Richard Gere and Jacob Elordi. The film is set to open in select theaters on December 6.
Adapted from the late Russell Banks’ novel Foregone—the same author whose book Affliction inspired Schrader’s 1997 film of the same name—Oh, Canada follows Gere as Leonard Fife, a documentary filmmaker who agrees to sit for a final interview to candidly reflect on his life. Fife, an artist in decline due to illness, is determined to tell his story without filter, examining his relationships, regrets, and his inevitable mortality. Known for his sharp, revealing documentaries, Fife has earned respect for his career, but his past—particularly his evasion of the Vietnam War draft and turbulent relationships—holds difficult truths.
In an extended interview with his former student, Malcolm (Michael Imperioli), Leonard recounts his younger years, including his time as a passionate figure (played by Elordi) during the tumultuous 1960s. At his insistence, his wife and collaborator, Emma (Uma Thurman), is present for the conversation, as Leonard lays bare both his triumphs and failures. The film presents a raw confrontation with Leonard’s past, weighing the myths against the reality, and forcing him to confront what remains.
This marks Schrader’s first collaboration with Gere since their iconic 1980 film American Gigolo. After premiering at Cannes, Oh, Canada screened at both the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the New York Film Festival, and is now being considered for awards recognition.
Schrader directed and wrote the script, with David Gonzales, Tiffany Boyle, Luisa Law, Meghan Hanlon, and Scott Lastaiti producing. Oh, Canada is a joint production by Northern Lights, Vested Interest, Ottocento, Left Home Prods., in association with Exemplary Films, Carte Blanche Entertainment, One Two Twenty Entertainment, and Sipur Studios, and is being presented by Arclight Films International.
