Todd Phillips' highly anticipated sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix, will be available for streaming on Max starting December 13.
It will also air on HBO linear channels on December 14 at 8 p.m. ET.
The polarizing film has earned $206 million globally, with $58 million coming from North America. Despite its success at the box office, the $200 million production is expected to incur losses of $150 to $200 million during its theatrical run.
Peter Debruge, chief film critic at Variety, labeled Folie à Deux a “scandalously unpopular sequel,” noting that it feels as though the film's tone has turned against its audience. He added, “It’s as if Phillips has alienated his original fans — and they’re now returning the sentiment.” Debruge also spoke with theater managers who reported an unusual trend: ticket cancellations and no-shows, likely due to the negative reviews.
The film’s synopsis reads: "Arthur Fleck, struggling with his dual identity as a failed comedian, finds the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital."
