From Beginner to Pro: Mastering Arcana, Cast, and Magick
Playing as Melinoë in Hades II feels both familiar and different from Zagreus in the first game. Melinoë is a powerful witch and the Princess of the Underworld, so her fighting style focuses more on magic, control, and smart positioning instead of just fast attacks.
Whether you are exploring Erebus or fighting enemies on the Surface, survival is not only about quick reflexes—it also requires good planning and understanding of game mechanics.
This guide will help you understand important systems like the Altar of Ashes, Arcana Cards, and Omega moves so you can defeat Chronos more easily.
1. Prioritize Your Arcana Cards
Before starting a run, you must choose your Arcana Cards at the Altar of Ashes. This system replaces the Mirror of Night from the first game.
You have a limited amount of energy called “Grasp,” so you need to choose cards carefully based on your playstyle.
Important Arcana Cards:
- The Wayward Son: Restores your health after leaving a location. Very helpful for beginners.
- The Huntress: Increases your damage when your Magick is not full.
- Titan: Gives you more Health and Magick.
- The Furies: Deals extra damage to enemies trapped inside your Cast. This is very powerful because crowd control is important in Hades II.
Pro Tip:
Upgrade your Grasp using Psyche. This allows you to equip more cards and become stronger in every run.
2. Master the Cast and Crowd Control
In the first Hades, Cast was a simple projectile. In Hades II, it creates a circle on the ground that traps enemies.
This is one of your most important abilities.
If too many enemies surround you, use Cast to stop them. This gives you time to move or prepare a strong attack.
Try to get Boons from gods like Zeus or Hestia that add damage effects to your Cast. This turns it from a defensive tool into a powerful attack.
3. Understand Omega Moves and Manage Magick
Melinoë uses Magick to perform stronger attacks called Omega Moves. You can activate them by holding down your Attack, Special, or Cast buttons.
Important Tips:
- Don’t use Omega Moves all the time. If your Magick runs out, you will be weaker.
- Try to get Boons from Hera or Apollo that help regenerate Magick.
- Good Magick management is very important during boss fights.
4. Gathering Resources is Important
In Hades II, you cannot ignore resource collection. It is necessary for progression.
Even if Boons look tempting, sometimes you should choose doors that give materials.
Key Points:
- Bring the right tool (Pick, Shovel, or Tablet) depending on what you need.
- Use the Cauldron at the Crossroads to unlock new features through Incantations.
- Resources like Cinder and Shadow are very important for upgrades.
5. Surface vs. Underworld Gameplay
Hades II introduces two different paths: the Underworld and the Surface.
When you go to the Surface, Melinoë slowly loses health because she cannot survive in that environment.
Tips for Surface Runs:
- Unlock the Ward Incantation to survive longer.
- Surface battles are more open, but enemies require better movement and timing.
- You will need more dashing and careful positioning compared to the Underworld.
6. Best Boon Synergies
Some gods work better together and can make your runs much easier.
Recommended Boons:
- Aphrodite: Great for close combat and applying Weak effect.
- Hephaestus: Gives Armor and powerful explosion damage. Good for defense.
-
Selene: Provides powerful Hex abilities.
- Moonlight Ray helps with healing.
- Phase Shift slows down time, which is very useful in boss fights.
7. Dash Smartly, Don’t Spam
In Hades II, dash has a small cooldown. You cannot spam it like in the first game.
You also have a Sprint ability. Holding the dash button lets Melinoë run faster.
Many bosses use “bullet hell” attacks, so you should:
- Use Sprint to move around safely
- Avoid relying only on dash
- Stay at the edges of the arena when needed
8. Talk to Everyone and Use Gifts
Talking to characters is very important in the game.
Give Nectar to allies and gods to unlock Keepsakes, which give special bonuses.
Useful Keepsakes:
- Knuckle Bones (Odysseus): Reduces the health of the next boss.
- Luckier Tooth (Schelemeus): Gives you an extra life (Death Defiance).
