Sony knows exactly what you’re looking for in a zombie movie – and it has just what you need.
Following the release of the first trailer for 28 Years Later, Sony has confirmed that Danny Boyle’s dive into the world of flesh-eating zombies is finally making its way to digital platforms. Originally released in 2002, 28 Days Later stars Cillian Murphy as Jim, who wakes up from a 28-day coma to find London overrun by zombies. The film remains one of the most iconic modern zombie films, introducing the terrifying “Rage Zombies” that sprint towards their victims at full speed. Fans have been eagerly waiting to experience this gruesome horror from the comfort of their own homes. While the film had been kept off streaming services for years, it’s finally arriving digitally.
Sony revealed on its official website that 28 Days Later will soon be available to stream.
A special page called “Go Back to Day One” allows fans to sign up for updates on the digital release, though no specific release date has been provided yet. Those who subscribe will also receive information on pre-ordering the film when it becomes available.
While digital collectors are thrilled to add this horror classic to their libraries, physical media fans are still left in the dark. Currently, there are no plans to release 28 Days Later on Blu-ray or as a much-anticipated 4K remaster. Hopefully, this will change soon, as Cillian Murphy’s haunting journey through an abandoned London deserves the highest-quality viewing experience.
After nearly two decades, Danny Boyle is back to complete the 28 trilogy. The first trailer for 28 Years Later gave fans a glimpse of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes in this highly anticipated sequel. Set to a chilling rendition of Rudyard Kipling’s poem “Boots,” the trailer is tense and unsettling, promising an intense, fear-filled experience when it hits theaters in June 2025. Cillian Murphy is confirmed to return, but the question remains: where is Jim in the trailer?
Fans thought they spotted Jim as a skeletal zombie in a brief, blink-and-you-miss-it shot. The zombie bears an eerie resemblance to Murphy, and some speculated that it was him, especially given his transformation for Oppenheimer. However, it’s now been confirmed that the zombie isn’t Murphy, leaving fans to speculate where Jim is hiding. Some believe he may be the character behind the creepy mask in the trailer, although the mask appears to be worn by a female character. It’s more likely that Murphy’s return will be revealed in a later trailer or, in the spirit of mystery, his appearance may be kept under wraps entirely until the film’s release.
28 Years Later is set to hit theaters on June 20, 2025. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland (who co-wrote 28 Days Later, and is also behind Ex Machina), the film is expected to be the first in a new horror trilogy.
