Sydney Sweeney, star of Anyone But You, Euphoria, and White Lotus, recently spoke out about the lack of genuine support among women in Hollywood.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Sweeney criticized the industry’s often-repeated mantra of “women empowering women,” calling it “fake” and a facade. She explained, “All people say is ‘women empowering other women.’ None of it’s happening.”
The actress, who’s faced her share of criticism, also reflected on a troubling comment from a female Hollywood producer earlier this year who disparaged her looks and acting ability, saying, “She’s not pretty, she can’t act. Why is she so hot?” Sweeney shared her frustration, stating, “It’s disheartening to see women tear each other down, especially those who should be mentoring younger talent.”
She also addressed the larger cultural issue at play. “We’re raised to believe only one woman can be at the top. That belief creates competition, instead of support,” she said. “I’m still trying to figure it out. Why am I getting attacked?”
Sweeney’s comments come after Carol Baum, a Hollywood producer, openly criticized her acting after watching Anyone But You. Baum questioned why Sweeney was so popular, calling her “not pretty” and claiming she couldn’t act. In response, Sweeney’s rep said, “It’s sad that someone in her position chooses to attack another woman instead of lifting her up.”
