Get Ready, Trainers! Pokémon Legends: Z-A Arrives on October 16, 2025, with Nintendo Switch 2 Support and a Summer Pokémon Presents Surprise!

The wait is finally over for Pokémon fans! The much-awaited "Pokémon Legends: Z-A" is officially releasing on October 16, 2025. This new game promises to bring a fresh experience to the Pokémon world – from battles and exploration to how humans and Pokémon live together. And there’s more good news! A special Pokémon Presents livestream will be held on July 22, 2025, giving fans an even deeper look into this exciting new adventure.

A New Look at Lumiose City – One City, One Big Story

This time, the entire game takes place in Lumiose City, a vibrant metropolis in the Kalos region, inspired by Paris. Unlike past games where players explored wide open regions, this time the adventure stays in one big city – but don’t worry, it’s still packed with mystery and action.

Lumiose City is going through a major urban redevelopment, aiming to create a perfect place where humans and Pokémon can live together in harmony. The city isn’t just a setting – it’s alive, with lots to explore and discover.

Real-Time Battles – A Brand-New Way to Fight

Forget turn-based battles – Pokémon Legends: Z-A introduces real-time combat! Now trainers and their Pokémon can move freely during fights, time their attacks, and use positioning to their advantage.

You'll need quick thinking and strategy as new battle mechanics are introduced, like move ranges, area of effect, and timing. You can even switch Pokémon during battle without waiting for turns. Battles will now feel more exciting and immersive than ever before!

Mega Evolution Returns – Bigger and Better

Good news for Kalos fans – Mega Evolution is back! This special feature lets certain Pokémon evolve into stronger forms with boosted stats and sometimes new types. The game’s cover art even shows Mega-Evolved Pokémon battling in the neon-lit streets of Lumiose City – showing how important this feature will be.

Wild Pokémon Zones and the Z-A Royale Tournament

Even in the city, wild Pokémon roam! Lumiose City includes Wild Zones, special areas designed to mimic natural habitats using advanced tech. Players can explore these zones, catch Pokémon directly (like in Legends: Arceus), or battle them first. Sneaking up on them may help too! And when night falls, the Z-A Royale begins – a competitive tournament where trainers start at Rank Z and fight their way up to Rank A. The grand prize? A mysterious wish that will be granted to the winner!

Start Your Journey with Familiar Faces

At the beginning, players will choose from three fan-favorite starter Pokémon:

  • Chikorita (Grass-type, Gen 2)
  • Tepig (Fire-type, Gen 5)
  • Totodile (Water-type, Gen 2)

Your home base will be Hotel Z, owned by AZ, a familiar character from Pokémon X and Y. You’ll also meet new friends who will help you face challenges across Lumiose City.

Coming to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2

"Pokémon Legends: Z-A" will be released on both Nintendo Switch and the new Nintendo Switch 2. If you buy the game for the original Switch, you can upgrade to the Switch 2 version with a paid pack that boosts graphics and performance.

Digital pre-orders start June 5, 2025, the same day the Nintendo Switch 2 launches. Physical pre-orders begin July 23. If you pre-order from Pokémon Center (US, Canada, or UK), you’ll get a random "Sitting Cuties" plush of one of the starter Pokémon – Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile – while supplies last.

Don’t Miss Pokémon Presents – July 22, 2025

Another big moment to look forward to: a new Pokémon Presents livestream on July 22, 2025. This event is expected to reveal more about Pokémon Legends: Z-A – including gameplay footage, new Pokémon, and deeper story details. And starting May 28, new Mega Evolution merchandise will be available at Pokémon Centers in the US, Canada, and UK. Look out for giant pins of Mega Charizard, Mega Lucario, and more fan favorites!
