The Magpie is one of the standout pets in Grow a Garden, its unique passive that boosts your profits when selling Silver-mutated fruit. With the Trader Arrives Update pushing Gem Chests into the spotlight, players are now more determined than ever to pick up this feathered moneymaker.

Where the Magpie Comes From: The Gem Chest

The Magpie does not appear in regular Sheckle-based eggs. It is exclusive to the Gem Chest, a premium chest tied directly to the Trader Event and Trader Troy.

Magpie Pet Breakdown

  • Rarity: Legendary
  • Source: Gem Chest
  • Drop Chance: 14.5%
  • Passive Ability: Selling Silver-mutated fruit may grant random bonus rewards (resources, extra Sheckles, or items)

Because its ability synergizes perfectly with pets that apply the Silver mutation, the Magpie is an extremely valuable farming companion.

Two Ways to Get a Gem Chest

Since the Magpie drops only from Gem Chests, your approach should revolve around obtaining as many of these chests as possible. As of November 2025, there are two main paths:

1. Free Method — Complete Trader Troy’s Quests

Trader Troy, located near the portal to the Farmers Market, offers hourly quests that can award Gem Chests.

How it works:

  • Check what crop Troy wants—he shows the item above his stand.
  • Bring him the exact crop and submit it.
  • You’ll receive a random reward from his pool.

Gem Chest Drop Rate:

  • Around 5.48%
  • Low chance, but completely free—perfect for patient or free-to-play players.

Consistent farming and staying stocked with a variety of crops is key to maximizing your daily attempts.

2. Premium Method — Buy Gem Chests

If you’re willing to spend Robux, you can directly purchase Gem Chests from the shop, typically found in the Trader Event section.

Pricing examples:

  • 199 Robux for one
  • 575 Robux for three
  • 1699 Robux for ten

Exotic Gem Chests:

Occasionally the shop features Exotic versions with better odds—great for hunting ultra-rare pets like the Divine Bearded Dragon or the Magpie itself.

Best Strategies for Increasing Your Magpie Odds

Mass-Produce Quest Crops

Trader Troy’s quests refresh every hour, so having a large stockpile of basic, Rare, Epic, and Legendary crops lets you instantly complete any quest. More completions = more chances at the 5.48% Gem Chest drop.

Use Pet Trading to Your Advantage

If you pull an ultra-rare pet such as the Divine Bearded Dragon (1% drop chance), you may be able to trade it for a Magpie.

Since the Magpie has a 14.5% chance, it’s more common—making this a fair deal.

Always check the Grow a Garden values lists on community Discords before trading.

Maximize Profit After You Get the Magpie

Once you secure a Magpie, pair it with pets that apply the Silver mutation (such as pets from the Bug Egg or Anti-Bee Egg). This dramatically increases the number of Silver fruits you produce—and thus the number of bonus rewards triggered by the Magpie.
