How to Catch Riolu Early in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Step 1 – Reach the Location

Once you gain access to Lumiose City’s districts, head to Rogue Sector 4 Rooftops. Specifically, look for the roof of the Passage Ombrage Shopping Center in the southwestern corner of the area. That’s where Riolu likes to appear.

Step 2 – Check Time & Weather

Riolu only spawns during the daytime and under sunny weather. If conditions aren’t right, simply rest on a nearby Pokémon Center bench to change the time or wait for clear skies.

Step 3 – Make the Catch

When you spot Riolu (usually around Level 15–20), act fast—it’s a rare spawn! Throw a Quick Ball immediately for the highest chance of capturing it on your first turn.

Evolving Riolu into Lucario (The Friendship Grind)

Like in previous generations, Riolu evolves through Friendship, not leveling. Thankfully, Pokémon Legends: Z-A makes the bonding process faster and more interactive.

Here’s how to do it:

Maximize Friendship:

  • Spend time exploring Lumiose City with Riolu in your team.
  • Visit local Cafés and order tea or coffee with Riolu by your side. After about five visits, your friendship level should be high enough.

Time the Evolution:

  • The evolution only triggers during Daytime, so adjust your in-game clock if needed.

Trigger Evolution:

  • When your bond is maxed, a small arrow will appear next to Riolu’s name in your party menu.
  • Select it and choose “Evolve” to finally unleash your powerful Lucario!

How to Unlock Mega Lucario in Pokémon Legends: Z-A

Step 1 – Unlock Mega Evolution

Advance through the main storyline until you complete Main Mission 10: The Secrets of Mega Evolution.
(You’ll briefly use a Mega Lucario in Mission 9, but it won’t be yours until you finish Mission 10.)

Step 2 – Collect Mega Shards

Head into the city’s Wild Zones and battle to destroy glowing Mega Crystals. Each crystal drops valuable Mega Shards, which you’ll need to craft or purchase Mega Stones.

Step 3 – Acquire the Lucarionite

After gathering 240 Mega Shards, visit Quasartico Inc. in Northern Lumiose City. There, you can trade your shards for the Lucarionite, Lucario’s exclusive Mega Stone.

Step 4 – Activate Mega Evolution

Equip the Lucarionite to your Lucario and enter a battle. Once your Transformation Meter is full, press the right thumbstick to unleash Mega Lucario’s transformation and dominate the field!
