Actor Timothy West, Star of Great Canal Journeys, Passes Away at 90

Timothy West, the renowned English actor and television presenter, has passed away at the age of 90.

His children, Juliet, Samuel, and Joseph West, confirmed the news, stating, “After a long and extraordinary life on and off the stage, our darling father, Timothy West, died peacefully in his sleep on November 12.”

West, who had a career spanning several decades, was a familiar face on British television from the 1960s onward. He appeared in notable series such as Not Going Out, Bleak House, Gentleman Jack, Coronation Street, and EastEnders. His stage career was equally illustrious, with lead roles in Uncle Vanya, Death of a Salesman, The Master Builder, Long Day’s Journey into Night, and Macbeth. He was also known for portraying historical figures like Mikhail Gorbachev, Joseph Stalin, and Winston Churchill.

One of his most beloved projects was the TV series Great Canal Journeys, which began in 2014. The show, which highlighted West’s love for narrowboats, became a fan favorite for its warmth, humor, and the bond between him and his wife, actress Prunella Scales, who survives him. The couple had been married for 61 years.

West’s children expressed gratitude for the care he received during his final days, thanking the NHS staff at St George’s Hospital and Avery Wandsworth for their support.

In addition to his two sons with Scales, West had a daughter, Juliet, from his first marriage to Jacqueline Boyer.
