Doom The Dark Ages game to explore the origins of Doom Slayer
The iconic DOOM franchise is poised to make a grand return at this year’s Xbox Games Showcase on June 9. Previously known under the codename ‘Year Zero,’ the upcoming title is now officially named ‘DOOM The Dark Ages’ and has been in development for over four years.
Last year, initial insights into the new DOOM installment surfaced, hinting at a ‘medieval-inspired doom world.’ While this early information was vague, terms like ‘Year Zero,’ ‘The Dark Ages,’ and ‘medieval inspired’ start to form a clear picture of the game’s direction. It suggests we might explore the Doomslayer’s origins in a medieval setting, potentially serving as a prequel to the current storyline.
Speculation about the new game reignited earlier this year after Bethesda registered a new trademark, ‘IDKFA,’ a nod to a classic cheat code from the series. Last month, The Verge’s Tom Warren hinted at DOOM’s presence at the Xbox Games Showcase, a rumor we can now independently confirm.
The DOOM series has been a major success for both Xbox and ID Software. In 2020, a LinkedIn profile from an ID Software employee revealed that the franchise had generated over $450 million in revenue.
