Pandit Jasraj’s death has left a deep void in Indian cultural sphere: Prime Minister Narendra Modi

India’s greatest Classical Vocalist Pandit Jasraj passed away on Monday at the age of 90, following a cardiac arrest at his home in New Jersey.

“The unfortunate demise of Pandit Jasraj Ji leaves a deep void in the Indian cultural sphere. Not only were his renditions outstanding, but he also made a mark as an exceptional mentor to several other vocalists. Condolences to his family and admirers worldwide. Om Shanti,” the prime minister tweeted.

Along with the tweet, Modi also posted old pictures of him felicitating the maestro.

Jasraj had received various prestigious awards including Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan.

Born in Haryana, His musical career has spanned more than 80 years. His performances of classical and semi-classical vocals have become albums and film soundtracks. Jasraj has taught music in India, Canada, and the US. And represented the last of a generation of classical vocalists.

President Ram Nath Kovind also expressed his condolences and posted that the revered vocalist had “enthralled people with soulful renditions.”

Along with musicians from the country and the world, film personalities also paid tribute to Pandit Jasraj.
