Nokia has achieved a significant milestone in communications technology by demonstrating immersive audio and video calling, introducing a new dimension to the user experience.

CEO Pekka Lundmark described it as the future of voice calls, which differs from the traditional monophonic audio format commonly used in smartphones. Unlike monophonic calls that compress sound into a flat stream, Nokia’s innovation uses 3D audio to simulate a natural environment, allowing callers to feel each other’s presence as if they were in the same room.

According to Jenny Lukander, President of Nokia Technologies, this breakthrough represents a paradigm shift in live voice communications, similar to the introduction of monophonic telephony audio in smartphones and PCs.

The successful demonstration, conducted over a public 5G network using a standard smartphone, underlines the practicality of this advancement. Furthermore, Nokia anticipates broader applications beyond individual calls, envisioning more organized conference calls where participants’ voices are spatially separated.

What makes voice call by spatial audio big

Apps like Apple Music, Netflix, HBO Max, Discovery Plus, Peacock and Disney Plus offer spatial audio, but only on supported devices.

HighLights

  • Nokia introduces groundbreaking spatial audio for lifelike phone calls.
  • Users experience voices as if physically present, enhancing realism.
  • Demonstration over public 5G network showcases practicality and accessibility.
  • Potential extends to organized conference calls, promising natural group interactions.
  • Licensing opportunities aim to drive widespread adoption of the innovation.

Jyri Huopeniemi, head of audio research at Nokia Technologies, emphasizes the compatibility of this technology with existing smartphones, reducing the need for significant hardware upgrades. Although integration into the upcoming 5G Advanced standard is underway, widespread adoption may take a few years.

Still, Nokia aims to leverage this innovation through licensing opportunities, paving the way for a more immersive and engaging communication experience.
