Maharashtra Raigad Building Collapse 1 dead, several feared trapped; NDRF teams join rescue operations

At least one person died after a building collapsed in a residential area of Mahad in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on Monday. The victim was not a resident of the building, named Tarique Garden, but had suffered injuries in the accident, and died of a cardiac arrest while under treatment.

Visuals from this morning showed the rescue teams at the spot. In a video tweeted by the NDRF, sniffer dogs were also seen assisting the officials. Another footage shows the area around the spot covered in a huge cloud of dust as a part of the building collapsed to the ground.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear but building collapses are common during India’s June-September monsoon, with old and rickety structures buckling under the weight of non-stop rain.

“Around 60 people rescued, 25-30 are still feared to be trapped under the debris. Three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are here. One death reported so far. Injured are being treated and some are discharged,” said Tatkare.

The structure comprised 47 flats, police in the town of Mahad – 120 kilometres south of Mumbai – said in a statement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said he was saddened by the incident, and prayed the injured recovered soon. “Saddened by the building collapse in Mahad, Raigad in Maharashtra. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their dear ones. I pray the injured recover soon. Local authorities and NDRF teams are at the site of the tragedy, providing all possible assistance,” he said in a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Home Minister Amit Shah described the incident as “tragic” in a tweet on Monday and said that he has spoken to SN Pradhan, the chief of the disaster response force to provide all possible assistance.
