Producers of ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ Reflect on the Film’s Global Success Ahead of Japan Release
Vyjayanthi Movies’ groundbreaking Indian sci-fi mythological epic Kalki 2898 AD made a huge impact in 2024, amassing over $140 million worldwide before Pushpa 2: The Rise took over the top spot in December. Melding Hindu mythology with futuristic technology, the film has become a key milestone in the international expansion of Indian cinema.
Directed by Nag Ashwin, Kalki 2898 AD takes place in a dystopian future, where Bhairava (Prabhas), a formidable warrior with a mysterious past, struggles to survive in a world ravaged by war and environmental collapse. He becomes embroiled in an ancient prophecy that could alter the course of history. Amitabh Bachchan portrays the immortal Ashwatthama, a key figure from the Mahabharata, while Deepika Padukone plays Sumathi, who is carrying Kalki, the unborn avatar of Vishnu. Kamal Haasan stars as the villainous Supreme Yaskin. The film blends ancient mythology with cutting-edge technology, offering a thrilling spectacle that explores both physical and spiritual realms.
Produced by C. Aswani Dutt, Swapna Dutt Chalasani, and Priyanka Dutt, Kalki 2898 AD is one of the most expensive Indian films ever made, with an estimated budget of $72 million. “When we first envisioned Kalki 2898 AD, we never imagined the level of global impact it would have,” says producer Priyanka Dutt. “This success is a tribute to the power of storytelling, the dedication of our incredible team, and the unwavering support of our fans. We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to share this vision with the world.”
The film’s promotional campaign broke new ground, with a major launch at San Diego Comic-Con, a billboard reveal in Times Square, and international screenings at prestigious venues like the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles and the Busan International Film Festival. The marketing also featured a unique animated prelude on Prime Video and a nationwide tour showcasing Bujji, the six-ton futuristic vehicle that accompanies Bhairava. Additionally, the campaign was strategically timed with India’s IPL cricket season.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh praises the film’s innovative marketing: “What made Kalki 2898 AD’s promotional strategy stand out was its ability to create unforgettable experiences for fans. From lighting up Times Square to the nationwide Bujji Tour, every event was an immersive experience. Vyjayanthi Movies didn’t just promote a film; they created an entire universe that fans could engage with, maintaining excitement right through to the end credits.”
Producer Swapna Dutt Chalasani views Kalki 2898 AD as more than just a commercial venture. “For us, this film is a labor of love, a reflection of our dreams and aspirations for Indian cinema,” she says. “The warm reception from audiences around the world is a powerful reminder of the magic that great storytelling can create. We are incredibly thankful to our visionary director, Nag Ashwin, and our talented cast for making this dream a reality. This is only the beginning, and we look forward to seeing where this journey leads us.”
Kalki 2898 AD will be released in Japan on January 3, with plans already in the works for a sequel featuring an epic showdown between the characters portrayed by Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan.
