‘Glee’ actress Naya Rivera saved son before drowning, Sheriff’s says

Naya Rivera, a singer and actor who played a gay cheerleader on the hit TV musical comedy “Glee,” was missing at Southern California lake.

After Five days of Searching police found the body of Naya Rivera in a Southern California lake.

Rivera’s body was discovered five days after she disappeared on Lake Piru, where her son, Josey, was found July 8 alone on a boat the two had rented, the Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said. The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the body was Rivera’s.

“She mustered enough energy to get her son back onto the boat, but not enough to save herself,” Sheriff Bill Ayub said.

Her body was being taken to a medical examiner’s office for a full autopsy and confirmation of her identity from dental records, though no other missing persons have been reported at Lake Piru, he added.

Ayub said investigators believe that Rivera drowned accidentally and that her body was most likely trapped in the vegetation under the lake for several days before floating to the top, the AP reported.

Her son told rescuers he and his mother had gone into the water to swim, but she did not get back on the boat. He told investigators he then looked back and saw her disappear under the surface of the water, Ayub said.

The actress is best known for her role as Santana Lopez on the Fox show “Glee,” which quickly won critical acclaim after debuting in 2009. She appeared in nearly every episode of the beloved musical-comedy-drama, which ended in 2015.
