Miniature donkey Perry, who is believed to have inspired the beloved Donkey character from the Shrek films,
has sadly passed away at the age of 30. Perry died after a lengthy battle with laminitis, a painful hoof disease, leaving fans and the local community heartbroken.
Born in 1994, Perry made his home in Barron Park, Palo Alto, California, at the age of three, where he quickly became a cherished member of the community. News of his death was shared in a touching Instagram post by Barron Park, which expressed the deep sorrow of the park’s staff and visitors: “He was a beloved member of our community, and we know many people will be touched by his passing. Memorial plans will be announced soon.”
Perry’s connection to the Shrek franchise is unique and heartwarming. As the story goes, the spirited and humorous Donkey character voiced by Eddie Murphy was inspired by Perry. The donkey posed for photos and sketches that were used to create the animation, and in return, he received around £60 for his role.
The Shrek series, which debuted in 2001, became an instant hit, winning an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. The film introduced moviegoers to the unforgettable friendship between the grumpy ogre Shrek and his talkative, ever-optimistic sidekick, Donkey, who became a fan favorite for his wit and humor.
Although donkeys generally live between 25 and 40 years, Perry’s death marks the end of an era for those who knew him and those who cherished his role in one of the most iconic animated franchises of all time.
Perry will be missed, but his legacy as the inspiration behind one of Shrek’s most beloved characters will live on.
