Director Shankar Addresses Indian 2’s Negative Reviews and Confirms Indian 3’s Theatrical Release

In a candid interview, filmmaker Shankar opened up about the disappointment surrounding Indian 2, acknowledging the negative reviews the film received.

While admitting he didn’t anticipate the criticism, he emphasized that he’s moved past it and is focused on the future, particularly the much-awaited Indian 3, which will have a theatrical release.

Shankar, speaking to Tamil magazine Vikatan, discussed the impact of Indian 2 despite its criticism. He reflected on the film’s core message, saying, “I tried to convey a good thought. That way, I am happy. ‘If the house is clean, then the nation will be clean’ is a wonderful and necessary thought. Although it is a question of how it can be practically implemented, it is still important.”

He also shared two real-life instances where Indian 2 seemed to inspire social change. One involved a woman engineer from Telangana caught in a bribe scandal, which the media dubbed the ‘Indian 2 effect.’ Another incident involved an auto driver who snatched a woman’s gold chain, only to be handed over to the police by his son. Shankar expressed satisfaction over these events, suggesting that his film’s message had resonated with the public, despite the criticism.

Regarding the rumors about an OTT release for Indian 3, Shankar made it clear: “I will start work on Indian 3 once I finish working on Indian 2. Indian 3 will release in theatres.” This statement assures fans that the third installment of the iconic series will follow a traditional cinematic path, adding to the excitement surrounding its release.

Indian 2, which was released in July 2024, was eagerly anticipated, but unfortunately, it faced overwhelming negative reviews from both critics and audiences. The film is a sequel to Shankar’s 1996 classic Indian and stars Kamal Haasan, Siddharth, Rakul Preet Singh, and SJ Suryah. Indian 3 will explore the origins of Veerasekaran Balaram and Senapathy, both characters portrayed by Haasan, and will include significant period portions in its narrative.
